# Motion transfer

> Provide the right video and the right image so a character redoes the dance or gestures of a video.

In “Create a video”, the “Motion transfer” tool replaces the person in a video with another character. Your video keeps its gestures, its expressions and its camera moves: only the person changes.

There is no free text field. You provide a video and a person, you choose the scene and the resolution.

## What you provide

| Element | What it needs |
| - | - |
| “The video” | 3 to 30 seconds, 100 MB at most, a clearly visible person. MP4, MOV or WebM. |
| “The person” | A sharp image where the head, shoulders and chest are visible. Or one of your characters with a portrait. |
| “Scene” | “Video’s scene” or “Image’s scene”. |
| “Resolution” | The output quality, shown with its price per second. |

You choose a single person: an image, or a character from your account.

## The two scenes

* **“Video’s scene”**: only the person changes. Setting, light and camera stay those of your video. This is the default replacement.
* **“Image’s scene”**: the scene is recreated around the person in the image, with the movements of your video. This choice is included in certain plans only (the screen says so).

## Choosing the source video well

* **A clearly visible person**: this is the person who will be replaced. Pick a video where they fill the frame, without being hidden.
* **Lasts between 3 and 30 s.** A longer video is refused: trim it before uploading. A “30 s” file that lasts 30.2 s is trimmed to 30 s, not refused.
* **A file your browser can read**: use MP4 or MOV.

## Choosing the person's image well

* **At least 340 pixels per side.** Below that, the image is refused.
* **A width to height ratio between 2:5 and 5:2.** An image that is too stretched is refused: crop around the person.
* **Head, shoulders and chest visible**, front facing, well lit, face sharp.

## Before / after

> [tab] Weak
>
> Video: a party with ten people dancing, 45 seconds. Image: a selfie from far away, head cut off.
>
> The file is too long, the person to replace isn't clear, and the image shows neither the face nor the chest.

> [tab] Improved
>
> Video: a 15 second dance, a single dancer, framed from head to knees. Image: a sharp, front facing portrait, head and chest visible, 1024 pixels tall.
>
> One person, an accepted length, an image that gives a face and a chest to carry over.

## Common mistakes

* **Video too short or too long**: 3 to 30 s. Videos outside that range don't even show up in the picker's library.
* **Image too small or too stretched**: 340 px per side at least, ratio between 2:5 and 5:2.
* **Image and character at the same time**: choose one or the other.
* **Forgetting to tick the rights box**: it is mandatory. You must hold the rights to the video and have the consent of the people shown. Never use a person's image without their consent, nor to deceive or harm.
* **Expecting text or voice**: the tool redoes a movement, not a narration.

## Settings that go with it

* **Resolution**: 720p by default. A higher resolution costs more per second.
* **Price**: it is counted per second of transferred video. Test on a 5 to 10 second excerpt before a 30 second video.
* **Your video and your image** stay in your library, even if the generation fails.
* **Character**: create a character with a portrait in [the character tools](https://docs.rewatch.studio/tools/characters.md) to reuse it from one transfer to the next.

To remake a video your way, with a new scenario, see [remaking a video from a link](https://docs.rewatch.studio/video/from-a-link.md) instead.

## Before launching

> [!TIP]
>
> The “Replace the person” button shows the price. It is counted per second of video: a shorter video costs less. Try an excerpt first.

## What the tool does not do

* It rewrites no scenario, no text, no voice: the output is your video, with another person.
* It doesn't change the length: the video is transferred as is, trimmed to 30 s if it goes over.
* It doesn't replace “Video remake”, which redoes an entire story your way: see [remaking a video from a link](https://docs.rewatch.studio/video/from-a-link.md).
