# Regenerating in the editor

> Redo a shot image, a clip, a voice or a music track from the editor, without relaunching the whole video.

When a shot doesn't suit you, you don't have to relaunch everything. The editor lets you regenerate a single piece: a shot image, a clip, a voice, a music track. You only pay for the piece redone, and the shot updates at the end.

## Redoing a shot

On a selected shot, the “Regenerate” panel offers:

* “Regenerate the image”: redoes the shot's image. With “Redo the clip with the new image”, the clip is redone right after.
* “Regenerate the clip”: redoes only the animation.
* “Animate this shot with an engine”: animates a shot that was only a still image. An “Engine” menu lets you choose the one for the shot.
* “Redo the voice”: redoes the line.

The app warns you when a regeneration triggers others: “Also redoes N other shots in the chain”. It also shows the price before going ahead.

> [!NOTE]
>
> If a shot comes from the drawer, there is nothing to regenerate on it: generate another media from the drawer. And some formats don't regenerate their shots from the editor: open the project instead.

## Generating a media for the timeline

The “Type of media to generate” drawer has four tabs: Image, Clip, Voice, Music. Each field expects a concrete sentence.

```text theme={null}
Image (“Image description”): [subject], [framing], [light], [detail that tells a story].
Clip (“Motion and action”): [what moves], [camera movement], [what happens at the end].
Voice (“Text to speak”): the text, as is, with no stage directions.
Music (“Style”): [genre, instruments, energy], plus a short “Title”.
```

The examples provided by the app: “Close up of a hand turning a rusty key, cold light” for the image, “The camera moves in slowly, the door opens a crack” for the clip, “Dark synths, slow pulse” for the music style.

> [tab] Weak
>
> ```text theme={null}
> A door opening
> ```

> [tab] Improved
>
> ```text theme={null}
> The camera moves in slowly toward the door, it creaks open a crack, a thin strip of cold light falls across the floor.
> ```
>
> The camera movement, the subject's movement and the light are stated, without redescribing the whole scene.

For the clip, you can set the “Start image” and, if the engine allows it, the “End image” (optional: the clip ends on that image). The “References” take images from the shots or already generated ones, in limited number. The lyrics of a music track are optional.

What you generate lands on the timeline: an image as a still shot, a clip as a shot, a voice at the playhead, a music track in place of the editor's one (“Use as music”).

## Redoing the music

The “Music” panel lets you “Redo the music” with a “Style” (at least 3 characters) and a length. Empty, the project's style is reused. Some videos only lay down their music at export: it then can't be changed in the editor.

## Common mistakes

* Relaunching without reading the announced price: it is shown before each regeneration, look at it.
* Regenerating the image after approving the clip: the clip isn't redone on its own, tick “Redo the clip with the new image”.
* A voice text with acting directions: what you write is spoken.
* Canceling thinking it refunds: a task already sent to the provider is still billed.
* Exporting while a shot is regenerating: wait until they are ready, or the app refuses.

## Settings that go with it

* **Engine** of the shot: see [Choosing an engine](https://docs.rewatch.studio/models/choose.md).
* **Recents**: generated media stay in the drawer to be reused.
* Spending methodically: see [Spending credits wisely](https://docs.rewatch.studio/models/credits.md).
