How it works

How does [everyday object or technology] [do the thing that intrigues]?
[The surprising detail that almost nobody knows, if you have it].

[PROGRESS] *[STEP 1]* | [STEP 2] | [STEP 3]
Narrator: [The paradox: what everybody believes, and why it is wrong].
Narrator: [The question we then ask ourselves].
[CARD] [SMALL TITLE] | [The key number or fact, one word between *asterisks*]
Narrator: [Step 1 of the mechanism, 10 words at most].
Narrator: [What happens concretely].
[PROGRESS] [STEP 1] | *[STEP 2]* | [STEP 3]
Narrator: [Step 2 of the mechanism].
Narrator: [The consequence we see in daily life].
[PROGRESS] [STEP 1] | [STEP 2] | *[STEP 3]*
Narrator: [Step 3, or the proof].
[DARK CARD] [PAYOFF] | [The sentence people remember]
Narrator: [The payoff, which points back to the paradox at the start].

How does the microwave heat your soup without heating the plate?
You often hear that it makes the water “vibrate” at its natural frequency. That is false.

[PROGRESS] *WAVES* | WATER | HEAT
Narrator: Your microwave doesn't make the water vibrate.
Narrator: Yet that is what you were always told.
[CARD] THE SOURCE | A *magnetron* sends out 12 cm waves
Narrator: At the back, a magnetron sends out waves.
Narrator: They bounce off the metal walls.
[PROGRESS] WAVES | *WATER* | HEAT
Narrator: A water molecule has a positive side and a negative side.
Narrator: The wave flips it billions of times per second.
[PROGRESS] WAVES | WATER | *HEAT*
Narrator: It bumps into its neighbors. That friction is the heat.
Narrator: The plate holds little water. It barely heats up.
[DARK CARD] THE PROOF | The holes in the door are smaller than *the wave*
Narrator: And the grid in the door? Its holes block the waves, not the light.
